Can I have more than one MPAN?

Yes. If your premises has multiple electricity supply points — for example, separate meters for different floors or units — each will have its own MPAN. Multi-site businesses will have a different MPAN for each site.

What if my MPAN is wrong on my bill?

Contact your supplier immediately. An incorrect MPAN means your bill may be based on another customer's consumption data. This can result in significant over or under-billing and needs to be corrected promptly.

Do I need my MPAN to switch supplier?

Yes. Your new supplier will need your MPAN (and MPRN for gas) to process the switch. Without the correct reference numbers, the switch cannot be completed.

What is the difference between an MPAN and a meter serial number?

The MPAN identifies the supply point — the connection to the network. The meter serial number identifies the physical meter device. They are different numbers. If your meter is replaced, the serial number changes but the MPAN stays the same.

It is a 21-digit number, sometimes called an 'S number' or 'supply number'

What is an MPRN?

MPRN stands for Meter Point Reference Number — it uniquely identifies your gas supply point

It is typically a 6–10 digit number

Like the MPAN, it identifies the supply point rather than the meter

It remains the same if you change supplier

You can find your MPRN on your gas bill or on the meter itself

Why your MPAN and MPRN matter

Suppliers need your MPAN and MPRN to provide accurate quotes

They are required to register a change of tenancy or switch supplier

They allow suppliers to access your consumption history from the national database

Errors in MPAN or MPRN can cause billing problems or delays in switching

Check your most recent electricity or gas bill

Check the meter itself — the MPRN is often printed on the gas meter
