MPAN & MPRN Guide
A plain-English guide to understanding your Meter Point Administration Number (MPAN) and Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN) — what they are, where to find them and why they are important for your business energy account.
What is an MPAN?
MPAN stands for Meter Point Administration Number — it uniquely identifies your electricity supply point
It is a 21-digit number, sometimes called an 'S number' or 'supply number'
The MPAN identifies the physical connection to the electricity network, not the meter itself
It remains the same even if you change supplier or replace your meter
You can find your MPAN on your electricity bill, usually in a grid or box format
What is an MPRN?
MPRN stands for Meter Point Reference Number — it uniquely identifies your gas supply point
It is typically a 6–10 digit number
Like the MPAN, it identifies the supply point rather than the meter
It remains the same if you change supplier
You can find your MPRN on your gas bill or on the meter itself
Why your MPAN and MPRN matter
Suppliers need your MPAN and MPRN to provide accurate quotes
They are required to register a change of tenancy or switch supplier
They allow suppliers to access your consumption history from the national database
Errors in MPAN or MPRN can cause billing problems or delays in switching
If you have multiple meters, each has its own MPAN or MPRN
How to find your MPAN and MPRN
Check your most recent electricity or gas bill
Log in to your supplier's online portal
Check the meter itself — the MPRN is often printed on the gas meter
Contact your current supplier and ask them to confirm your MPAN or MPRN
If you cannot locate your MPAN, contact your local electricity distribution network operator (DNO)
