Business Energy Renewal Checklist
A practical checklist to guide you through the commercial energy renewal process — from identifying your contract end date to comparing quotes and signing a new deal.
Before your renewal window opens
Locate your current contract end date (check your bill, contract document or supplier portal)
Identify your renewal notification window (typically 30–90 days before end date)
Note any auto-renewal or rollover clauses in your current contract
Confirm your current unit rates (p/kWh) for electricity and gas
Note your current standing charges (p/day)
Gather your last 12 months of consumption data (kWh)
Reviewing your current position
Check whether your current tariff (fixed or flexible) still suits your business
Review whether your contracted capacity (kVA) matches your actual demand
Confirm your meter type is appropriate (AMR, HH, smart)
Check you are on the correct VAT rate (5% or 20%)
Verify your Climate Change Levy treatment is correct
Getting quotes
Contact your current supplier for a renewal quote
Obtain at least two or three alternative quotes from other suppliers
Use an independent broker or consultant to access a broader panel of suppliers
Compare quotes on a like-for-like basis (same contract length, same payment terms)
Check for exit fees or early termination clauses in any new contract
Before you sign
Read the full contract terms, not just the headline rate
Confirm the contract start and end dates
Check the renewal notification window for the new contract
Confirm payment terms and direct debit arrangements
Keep a copy of the signed contract in a safe place
