Business Energy Moving Premises Guide
A practical guide to managing your commercial energy accounts when moving into or out of business premises — covering change of tenancy, meter readings, new contracts and how to avoid common problems.
Before you move in
Identify the existing energy suppliers for the premises (ask the landlord or previous tenant)
Locate the electricity meter (MPAN) and gas meter (MPRN)
Take opening meter readings on your first day — photograph them with a timestamp
Check whether there are any outstanding debts on the account (you are not liable for previous tenant debts)
Confirm the meter type (smart, AMR, traditional)
Notifying suppliers
Contact the existing supplier to register as the new account holder (change of tenancy)
Provide your opening meter readings and the date you took occupancy
Request confirmation of the change of tenancy in writing
Check whether you are being placed on a deemed (out-of-contract) rate — these are typically expensive
If on a deemed rate, request quotes and switch to a fixed contract as soon as possible
Choosing a new contract
Do not feel obliged to stay with the existing supplier
Compare quotes from multiple suppliers before committing
Consider contract length — shorter contracts offer flexibility; longer contracts may offer better rates
Check the renewal notification window in any new contract
Confirm the contract start date aligns with your occupancy date
When you move out
Take final meter readings on your last day — photograph them with a timestamp
Notify your supplier of your move-out date and provide final readings
Request a final bill and confirm your account is closed
Check for any exit fees in your current contract
Keep copies of all correspondence for at least 12 months
